Pray for the Faithful Departed

Dear Friends,

This past week, with the Trifecta celebrations of All-Hollow’s Eve, All Saints Day and All Souls Day, we’ve entered into that final part of our liturgical year focused on the world-to-come and culminating in the great triumph of our Lord on the Feast of Christ the King.

It is a time to reflect on our mortality--memento mori--remember that you are going to die. If the Lord were to call you from this life tomorrow, are you ready? Are you in a state of grace and reconciled with those around you? Is the Lord the center of your life and basis of your hope?

Because of the communion we share with all of the faithful departed, these first few days of November also present us with some singular opportunities to pray for our departed loved ones. On the days of Nov 1-8, we can obtain a plenary indulgence each and every day for a different deceased family member or friend. The requirements are to go to confession, attend Mass and receive Holy Communion, pray for the Pope’s intentions (for November it is to pray for children who are suffering, especially those who are homeless, orphans, and victims of war; may they be guaranteed access to education and the opportunity to experience family affection) and to visit a local cemetery and pray for the deceased person. Note--it does not have to be the cemetery where that person is buried. 

If you are reading this on the weekend of November 5-6, you still have a couple of days to obtain this great treasure through which you can be the agent of someone completing their time in Purgatory and entering into the fullness of God’s presence. I can’t think of a greater gift we can offer.

A reminder that next week we will be asking all of the members of our parish to consider making a donation to the Perpetual Adoration Chapel. Please be praying and discussing what you can give to make the chapel a reality for the parish. If you will be out of town or would like to make your donation before then, you can go to the website www.olmctempe.com  and make your donation/pledge online. We have great momentum -- thus far we’ve raised 87% of our goal. With your help and God willing, this time next year the Divine Mercy Chapel will be available for all to visit and encounter the Living God.
