What is this Commitment Sunday about?
by Fr. Robert Aliunzi | 10/05/2024 | Weekly ReflectionDear Friends,
For the last five weekends of September, our reflections centered on stewardship, covering its three pillars of time, talent, and treasure. This weekend, as members of our parish community, it is our time to commit. As a community, we want to reaffirm our resolve and commitment to faithful stewardship to the support of our parish. As we do so, let us keep in mind that this is a sacred moment for us to reflect on our relationship with God and our role as stewards of His resources.
The Bible reminds us that we are not owners of what we have but managers of God's gifts (1 Corinthians 4:2). As such, our stewardship commitment is a direct response to God's generosity towards us and His provision for all our needs (2 Corinthians 9:6-8). As our Lord Jesus teaches us, faithful stewardship is essential to our spiritual growth (Matthew 25:14- 30). We have to embrace it and allow it to permeate every aspect of our lives.
This is where our Commitment Sunday comes in because it gives us the practical opportunity to:
- Reaffirm our faith and trust in God's sovereignty and trust that He will always provide for our needs.
- Evaluate our stewardship practices.
- Renew our commitment to faithful service.
- Support the mission and ministry of our church.
As we make our commitments today, let us do so in the context of these key areas we have been reflecting upon throughout the month of September:
- Time: Prioritize God's purposes (Ephesians 5:16).
- Talents: Develop and utilize skills for God's glory and for the services of our brothers and sisters (Matthew 25:14-30).
- Treasure: Manage finances and resources with generosity (2 Corinthians 9:6-8).
- Temple: Care for physical bodies as temples of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19-20).
And so, by making this stewardship commitment today, we are not only acknowledging God's ownership of all that we have and His provision for all our needs but are also challenged to cultivate an attitude of gratitude and responsibility over whatever we have and align our lives with God's purposes for us.
As you consider your commitment to your parish today, therefore I want you to ask yourself the following important questions:
- What can I give back to God in gratitude?
- How can I serve others through my church?
- What talents can I share for God's glory?
I love you!
