The Power of Trust in God over Fear after our General Election
by Fr. Robert Aliunzi | 11/16/2024 | Weekly ReflectionDear Friends,
We have just gone through an election peacefully, for which we must be grateful to God. However, it is not an exaggeration to say that the period preceding the election and the election day itself were full of fears and anxieties at many different levels. Almost two weeks after the election, fear of the unknown about the future of our country may still be lingering among some of us, while others may be very optimistic. In this article, I want to dwell briefly on the power of trust in God over fear in an attempt to make some sense of our situation.
I want to begin by acknowledging that this election period has been very divisive and may have caused some fear and uncertainty among some of us. This may have undoubtedly forced us to assess our priorities as a country that claims to have been founded on God, whether we are aware of it or not. After the election, everyone was affected by the outcome in one way or another. This fact has unfolded to me with clarity over the last couple of days as I discussed the unfortunate passing of Proposition 139, among others, and the election results, in general, with different parishioners and friends.
This has forced me to reflect very seriously upon what is truly necessary and vital for our country’s political, economic, and spiritual future and what is not, no matter who our president is. In so doing, I realized that it is time for us to ask these most important questions: What are our priorities as a country, and what are they founded on? Do we choose the power of Trust in God over Fear or not in these? Where is the place of God in all of these? Asking and answering these questions is inevitable because every one of us must come to terms with the outcomes of this election, whether we favor it or not. However, as believers, whatever answers we give, we must never allow fear to override our trust in God.
As I reflected on these, I came across what I want to call “Ten Commandments,” which made a lot of sense to me, especially after this election results. Allow me to share them with you. It goes:
After the election is over, we can still guarantee these results:
- God will still be on His throne.
- Jesus will still be King of Kings and Lord of Lords.
- The Bible will still have all the answers to every problem (not political ideologies of rhetorics).
- The tomb will still be empty (because Christ is risen)
- Jesus will still be the only way to heaven.
- Prayer will still work – it will still make a difference. And God will still answer our prayers.
- The cross, not the government, will still be our salvation.
- There will still be room at the cross.
- Jesus will still save anyone who places their faith and trust in him
- God will still be with us always- He will never leave us or forsake us.
So dear friends, we must never let fear after this election overpower us or cause some of us to despair no matter what our political aŬliations are. We must TRUST in God. Let God be where He belongs – FIRST PLACE!
I love you!
