What does the final week of Advent tell us?
by Fr. Robert Aliunzi | 12/21/2024 | Weekly ReflectionDear Friends,
As we enter the final part of our Advent season, the Church invites us to intensify our preparation for the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ, in a few days’ time. Since the beginning of the season, we have had great opportunities here at our parish to prepare by participating in our “Lessons and Carols” led by our own choir and clergy; then we had the “Honor Your Mother” Novena Rosary which our diocese asked our parish and school to lead, followed by a very inspiring and engaging “Advent Mission” led by the renowned and nationally acclaimed Jesse Romero.
We also added some extra days for confession during this week. So, by and large, we have had an abundance of opportunities to prepare ourselves spiritually for this great occasion of the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ.
The Fourth Week of Advent, also known as the Week of Love, is a time for us to shift our reflections on the profound love of God that led Him to send His only Son to save us. The readings for this week are rich in imagery and symbolism, which are precisely meant to draw us into the mystery of God's love. In the first reading from Micah (Micah 5:1-4) we hear of the prophecy of the Messiah's birth in Bethlehem, emphasizing God's desire to be close to His people. The Psalm (Psalm 80:2-3, 15-16, 18-19) echoes this theme, asking God to "rouse your power and come to save us."
In the second reading from Hebrews (Hebrews 10:5-10) we are reminded of Christ's willingness to come to earth, taking on human flesh to redeem us. Finally, the Gospel (Luke 1:39-45) presents the beautiful scene of Mary's visit to Elizabeth, highlighting the joy and love that fills the hearts of those who welcome Jesus as Elizabeth did.
As we reflect on these readings, I invite you to ponder the depth of God's love for us expressed in his becoming a human being like us and being born as a fragile little baby in a manger. At a deeper level, let us be reminded that Jesus' birth is a personal encounter with the living God.
As we prepare to celebrate Christmas in a few days' time, let us ask ourselves the following important questions: How can I…
- Make room for Jesus in my heart and life?
- Show love and kindness to those around me just as God has shown love to me?
- Surrender my will to God's plan just as Mary did?
- Make time to pray with the readings, asking the Holy Spirit to illuminate my understanding?
- Engage in acts of charity and kindness, reflecting God's love for those in need?
- Create a prayerful atmosphere in my home using candles, music, and symbols of Advent?
- Spend some extra time in front of the Blessed Sacrament in Adoration for the remaining days of Advent?
As we conclude the Fourth Week of Advent, let us remember that Christmas is not just a celebration of a one-time historical event but a lived experience of God's love. May our hearts be filled with joy, love, and gratitude as we welcome the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ. Merry Christmas to you all in advance!
