Frequent Confession is a Noble Act of Faith
by Fr. Paul Celestine Lokunume | 10/16/2026 | Weekly ReflectionDear friends, A young man once asked his Pastor: "Father, I haven't committed any serious sins. Do I really need to go to Confession often?"
The priest smiled and replied: "My son, Confession isn't only for those who have fallen badly. It's also for those who want to grow in holiness."
Many Catholics think the Sacrament of Reconciliation is something to receive only after committing a grave sin. But the Church encourages frequent Confession, even for those who are sincerely striving to live a holy life.
Here are two important things to remember:
- Reconciliation, or the Sacrament of Penance, like the other Sacraments, needs intentional preparation.
- Confession is not only about forgiveness. It is also about spiritual growth.
However, we can sometimes get trapped in the presumption of God's mercy! Using forgiveness as a license to do wrong traps you in repeating cycles.
It:
- turns rare mistakes into comfortable daily habits.
- convinces you that you can stop whenever you choose.
- creates deep spiritual procrastination.
- reduces sacred grace to a cheap utility.
- prevents authentic emotional and spiritual healing.
- replaces honest accountability with empty rationalization.
Therefore, go to confession as often as possible and remember to prepare yourself with a prayerful, thorough examination of conscience and knowledge that you are presenting yourself to a merciful god through the church minister. THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A "QUICK CONFESSION!"
Here are five beautiful benefits of going to Confession regularly.
1. IT STRENGTHENS YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD. Every sincere Confession restores or deepens our friendship with God. Even when confessing venial sins, we open our hearts to His mercy and allow His grace to transform us.
2. IT HELPS FIGHT TEMPTATION. Confession gives us sacramental grace to resist the sins we struggle with. The more honestly we bring our weaknesses to Christ, the stronger we become in overcoming them. This Sacrament requires genuine sorrow and a turn away from wrongdoing.
3. IT BRINGS PEACE TO YOUR SOUL. Carrying guilt, shame, or hidden sins can weigh heavily on the heart. Through the words of absolution Christ offers forgiveness, healing, and the peace that only He can give.
4. IT HELPS YOU GROW IN HUMILITY. Confessing our sins reminds us that we all need God's mercy. It teaches us to rely on His grace rather than our own strength and keeps us from becoming spiritually proud.
5. IT HELPS YOU WORTHILY RECEIVE HOLY COMMUNION. Frequent Confession prepares your soul to receive Jesus in the Eucharist with greater reverence, love, and purity of heart. A clean soul is more open to the graces Christ desires to give through Holy Communion.
Finally, frequent Confession is one of God's greatest gifts to His Church. It not only forgives sins but also strengthens us against temptation, heals our hearts, deepens our friendship with God, and helps us grow in holiness. Every Confession is a fresh encounter with the infinite mercy of Christ.
In simple words, Catholics should go to Confession regularly because:
- it makes your soul stronger.
- it gives you peace.
- it helps you resist sin.
- it prepares you to receive Jesus in the Eucharist.
And above all, it reminds you that God's mercy is always greater than your failures. Be at peace with the Lord by having an honest, well-intentioned, and unhurried Confession.
Jesus, I trust in you.
